As schools worldwide are figuring out the safest way to start the upcoming school year, Mexico has decided to implement instruction on television. Education Secretary Esteban Barragán Moctezuma informed that the country signed a deal with public and private television network executives to put educational instructions on television.

According to El Universal, Mexico, with a population estimated at 128,932,753 people has reported approximately 443, 813 covid-19 cases and 48,012 deaths. Secretary Moctezuma mentioned that returning to classes was not prudent, as children could carry the virus and infect relatives at home. Many countries that reopened schools, including the U.S had to close due to the spread of covid-19 amongst children.

Mexico’s government decision to implement schooling through television stems from the fact that 94% of the population has access to television. Mexico is also planning to distribute 140 million free textbooks, and provide classes through the radio for indigenous communities, and for homes that lack access to TV.

President of Mexico, Manuel López Obrador informed that costs are still under discussion but that they would be minimal. The government expressed that schools will remain closed until they have a better account of the pandemic's risks.
