24-hr Social Media "Freeze"

On September 16, 2020 many celebrities such as Kim Kardashian West, Katy Perry, and Leonardo DiCaprio were part of a 24-hour “freeze” on Instagram. The purpose of the “freeze” is in protest against Facebook’s inability to tackle misinformation about the election, and hateful content. The organization also wants misinformation about the upcoming election to stop circulating.

The “freeze” is being used to back-up the hashtag #stophateforprofit, a movement that started in June of 2020. The movement was started to stop the spread of hate, racist, and violent content on social media, more specifically Facebook. These ads are supported by paid advertisements.

Kim Kardashian West posted on her Instagram account on Tuesday, ““I can’t sit by and stay silent while these platforms continue to allow the spreading of hate, propaganda and misinformation – created by groups to sow division and split America apart – only to take steps after people are killed.”

Other celebrities who have backed the movement include Ashton Kutcher, Mark Ruffalo, Kerry Washington, Rosario Dawson, Sasha Baron Cohen, and Jamie Foxx.

Facebook declined to comment on the movement’s demands, and the social media “freeze” out.
