A gender reveal party has caused a major wildfire in California on Saturday morning.
A couple on Saturday morning decided to set off a smoke bomb that would either send blue or pink smoke rising in the air for their gender reveal party. As the device ignited, so did the tall grasses surrounding it.
El Dorado, where the gender reveal occurred, had to force the town’s residents to evacuate their homes. The fire so far has burned over 13,000 acres of land, forcing over 21,000 residents to flee their homes.
The family that caused the fire, tried using water bottles to help detain the fire, but the flames moved too quickly through the vegetation. California is having record high temperatures, and during this season, it is known that Southern California is more “flammable”.
The fire is slowly being contained, as 31% of it was contained on Thursday. However, criminal charges are being considered, but officials are waiting until the fire is detained. The family is being cooperative with officials.
Gender reveal parties are a popular trend that originated in 2008. Jenna Karvunidis, the one who is credited for coming up with the idea of a gender-reveal party, has now announced that parents-to-be need to “stop it”.
“Stop having these stupid parties,” blogger Jenna Myers Karvunidis said in a Facebook post on Monday. “For the love of God, stop burning things down.”
